What is Featured Snippet?

Definition

A featured snippet is a special search result Google shows at the very top of the page — "position zero" — that directly answers a query with an excerpt, table, or list pulled from a webpage. Earning a featured snippet dramatically increases visibility and click-through rate, even for pages that rank in positions 2 through 10.

Understanding Featured Snippet

Featured snippets appear above all other organic results (hence "position zero") and are designed to answer a search query directly on the results page without requiring a click. They commonly appear for informational queries — "how to," "what is," "best way to" — and take several formats: paragraph snippets (a text excerpt), list snippets (numbered or bulleted lists), table snippets (data formatted in a table), and video snippets (a YouTube video with a timestamp answering the query).

Google automatically selects which content to feature in snippets — there is no direct application or configuration. However, content can be optimized for snippets by: clearly stating the question being answered (often in a heading), providing a concise direct answer in 40–60 words immediately after the heading, structuring lists and step-by-step content with HTML list tags, and using tables for comparison or data content. Pages that already rank on the first page are most likely to earn snippet positions.

The click-through impact of featured snippets is debated. On one hand, they dramatically increase SERP visibility and branded impressions. On the other, some users get their answer from the snippet without clicking — so organic clicks may actually decrease for the featured page. The overall verdict from most studies is positive: featured snippets increase total traffic because of higher visibility, even accounting for zero-click behavior.

Real-World Examples

  1. 1

A marketing agency writes a concise answer to "what is a conversion rate?" beneath an H2 heading — Google pulls this as a featured snippet, increasing organic traffic to the page by 65% despite ranking position 3.

  2. 2

An e-commerce site's sizing guide earns a table snippet for "women's shoe size conversion chart" — appearing above all competitors for a query with 40,000 monthly searches.

  3. 3

A how-to article restructured with numbered HTML steps earns a list snippet for a "how to" query, generating 3× the impressions it received as a regular listing.

Why Featured Snippet Matters for Your Business

Featured snippets hand you the most visible real estate in Google search results without requiring you to rank #1. For informational queries relevant to your business — how-to questions, definitions, comparisons — optimizing for snippets can drive significant traffic from positions you couldn't otherwise reach. In voice search (Google Home, Siri), featured snippets are typically the only result read aloud, making them even more valuable.
